Welcome to the Llanmaes village website

Llanmaes Community Council Members

I’m originally from Edinburgh but have lived in Llanmaes (with my wife Caroline) for 25 years although we moved here after spending three years living in America. We moved here for work in the chemical industry and have stayed ever since. I have two daughters who are both away ‘studying’ at university just now and it was an immense privilege to bring up a family in such a neighbourly, pleasant and rural community. I have been a community councillor for ten years now and became chairman last April. As a family we like all sorts of outdoor activities, nature and wildlife so I am committed to protecting our community from the many pressures exerted on us which could detract from the qualities that make Llanmaes so special.

Born and bred in Wales - growing up in Llantrisant and Tredegar - I moved to the Vale in 2005, originally to Eglwys Brewis and then to Llanmaes in 2017. I joined the Llanmaes Community Council in 2020 and in 2022 became Vice Chairman.

I have worked in the Welsh Higher Education sector since 1995 and have worked at almost every university in South Wales. My work has always been focussed on quality assurance issues in education and ensuring students receive the best education experience. Since 2008 my career focus has been in developing academic partnerships and as part of this work there is also a focus on delivering high quality education experiences and being accountable for this delivery.

Having laid down roots in Llanmaes, I see myself as being here for the long-haul and am therefore keen to be involved and contribute to local community matters. I feel we are privileged to live in such a welcoming and friendly village.

As well as being a member of the Community Council, I am a School Governor at Ysgol Dewi Sant in Llantwit Major and a Governor at Llantwit Major School. I also sit on the Joint Management Committee for the Village Hall in Llanmaes. In my free time - huh, like there's plenty of that!!!!... I enjoy being outdoors, sightseeing, music and history.

I retired to Llanmaes in 2018, downsizing to a Bungalow on Tyle House Close. My working career began as a   Secondary school Home Economics teacher, retraining when my own children had left home in Business Management. I worked on an ESF funded project with the University of Northampton before moving to Cardiff to work as an ESF and Lottery funded project manager and funding officer for a Childcare Charity supporting the development of the Out of School sector, and working closely with the Welsh Government. Originally from West Wales I am a fluent Welsh speaker and in my spare time I was a member of a few choirs over the years, a keen gardener and latterly owning a motorhome, exploring Wales and beyond. I joined the Community Council to help support our village community which is a very precious close knit unit. I was previously a member of Neighbourhood Watch when I lived in Cardiff.

I’m originally from beautiful Kingsgate on the Kent coast but moved to Reading for University and found myself remaining there throughout my working life.  The majority of my career was within the pharmaceutical sector, ultimately becoming the Chief HR Officer for a global research organisation.  When the opportunity for early retirement arose, I jumped at the chance and my husband and I landed firmly on our feet when we discovered Llanmaes.  We absolutely love it here and are for ever amazed at the wonderful community spirit and support we come across daily.  We are fortunate that some of our family are close by, with both my daughters also living in Wales.   We thoroughly enjoy walking the beach with our two rescue dogs and getting involved in various community activities.  I joined the Community Council in order to try and helpful maintain the marvellous community spirit we have here and look forward to working towards keeping LLanmaes the wonderful village that it is.
