Llanmaes gets a new boules pitch
The Llanmaes Social Committee has been active in recent
weeks in arranging for a boules pitch to be built in the grounds of St
Cattwg’s Village Hall. This was made possible by a successful grant
application to the Kickstart III grant run by the Vale of Glamorgan
Council. In recent years a number of Vale villages have acquired such
pitches enabling villagers to enjoy the game which is seen in almost every
French village and town.
Social Committee chairman, David Harris said that although
the game can be played on grass or a sandy beach a proper pitch is needed for
more serious enjoyment and particularly if inter-village competitions are to
become a reality. He was grateful to the Vale Council (Kickstart III grant)
for their generous support of village activities such as this and to the Hall
Joint Management Committee for agreeing to have the pitch within their grounds.

A group comprising members of both organisations and others
from the village enjoyed a wine and cheese lunch on Sunday 6th
November in the hall before forming teams and going outside to play in the
glorious autumn sunshine. The result was a win by Graham and Debbie
Cartwright who narrowly beat Sian and Geoff Winnard to win a bottle of
wine. Boules sets will be kept in the Blacksmiths Arms on the edge of the
village green for would-be competitors to borrow and try their luck - a set of
rules will be posted close to the pitch. Summer evenings in Llanmaes look
set to become even more interesting next year! - in the picture are the participants with Bill Lee centre about to play.
